Top 5 Takeaways From an Internship at SEER

Hey there! My name is Marissa, and I’ve been lucky to call myself SEER’s digital marketing intern for the last few months.  During my time at SEER, I was fortunate enough to work in each of our three departments--SEO, PPC, and Analytics. Each rotation started with training sessions with different employees having hopes that I would like their department best, however, I still don’t think I can choose! I’ve learned so much about each department and have had a great time doing it!

Unfortunately, my internship is coming to an end, so I’d like to share my top 5 takeaways from my time at SEER.

1. It’s a whole new language!

Sure, every industry has its own jargon, but when I first began my training sessions at SEER, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I knew that SEO = Search Engine Optimization and PPC = Pay Per Click...but what in the world was a SERP? H1? Black hat? Spiders? I had a lot of learning to do! Thanks to my super helpful training sessions in each department, I now feel like I’m bilingual!

2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

My favorite part about working at SEER is how easy it is to learn just about anything you can dream of! If there is something you don’t understand or a subject you’re curious about, all you have to do is ask! SEER is filled with people ready and willing to drop their knowledge whenever and wherever it’s needed. Don’t know who to ask? Check the SEER blog for more tips and tricks!

3. Advanced Search Queries = LIFE!

Wow, I was really missing out. If you know SEO, you probably know that an advanced search query can help you find just about anything you need on the internet. Can you imagine that I tried to start link prospecting without knowing about these?! After much practice, I’d like to consider myself an advanced search query pro (and let me tell you, writing my research papers has been SO much easier)!

4. Set an end goal.

So you want more traffic to your website? Well...why? As with most things in life, you’re always working towards something, and marketing is no different. Whether you want your visitors to purchase your items or want them to sign up for your newsletter, it is important to know why you want to drive traffic to your website.

5. Time management...learn it!

I love being busy, and I rarely say no to work. Sounds like a great trait to have right? WRONG. Working as an intern at an agency, no one can effectively manage your schedule except you. Everyone is working on different things for different clients, and they have no idea what other projects you were asked to work on (think about all those times your teachers all scheduled exams on the same day!). Enter: Google Calendar. Schedule everything in here! Always ask how long a project is expected to take before agreeing to help with it, then block that time off in order to complete it! This was super helpful advice I received on my first day, and I am so thankful for it!

Overall, this internship has taught me more about digital marketing than anything else I’ve experience thus far. So, I’d like to thank everyone at SEER for teaching me and helping me throughout the last few months. It’s been a really amazing experience, and I can honestly say that I feel ready for whatever is next in my career path!
