If you heard a collective wailing from the SEO community last fall and weren’t quite sure what all the fuss was about, chances are it was because SEO practitioners’ favorite free Chrome extension, Keywords Everywhere, moved to a paid model.
Keywords Everywhere was (and still is) a great tool for getting keyword-level metrics overlaid on top of websites like Google Search, Search Console, and YouTube. This means you’re able to get important information like search volume, related searches, and similar keywords as you navigate search results pages as part of your keyword research process.
Although their new pricing structure is actually pretty affordable, there are several Keywords Everywhere alternatives out there that are still free - here are 3 that we like:
Keyword Surfer
Keyword Surfer is the most similar to Keywords Everywhere on this list:
While you won’t get the range of data that Keywords Everywhere has (like Cost per Click and competition metrics), Keyword Surfer will give you search volume for your query, as well as similar keywords and related searches based on geography. It even includes some backlink and traffic estimate data.
While these should probably be considered directional at best, they’re useful to get a quick snapshot of the overall competitiveness around a particular query.
Keyword Planner
If search volume is the primary feature you're looking for from a Keywords Everywhere replacement, then Keyword Planner might be a good fit for you.
The Keyword Planner tool housed in Google Ads has been a source of search volume data for many SEO practitioners for years.
Keyword Planner provides search volume data directly from Google's databases and allows you to get pretty specific in the locations you're looking for volume from.
One drawback to note: Keyword Planner will often combine similar keywords together when it spits out its data.
For example, if you are looking for the search volume for both, "seo tools" and "tools for seo", Keyword Planner may combine these together since they have a similar intent. That doesn't necessarily mean there is no search volume for the keyword Google decides to merge.
The best way around this, though time-consuming, is to search for keyword volume by each keyword individually.
Keywords Nowhere
Keywords Nowhere (get it??) is another free Keywords Everywhere clone.
While it lacks the related searches and backlink data that Keyword Surfer has, it’s lightweight and unobtrusive overlay providing search volume, similar keyword, and CPC data right up top on search results pages:
